Zhang Jianwei - Master in Management - Business Managament track , MSc in Data Science & AI

Can you briefly introduce your current employer and your role?

I am currently working in the International Key Account Development Department of the Overseas Marketing Company at SANY Renewable Energy Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of SANY Group. My main responsibilities involve managing international key accounts.

How did you find your current job?

I started this job in November 2022. A headhunting agency reached out to me, recommending me for an interview with SANY Renewable Energy. After a successful interview, I received the offer on the same day.

How has the EDHEC programme contributed to your current role?

My experience at EDHEC was invaluable. I enrolled in the Master in Management—Business Management track, a two-year programme with one-year of professional immersion, ranked #4 in the Financial Times 2024.  The first year focused on building a solid foundation in business knowledge and skills. During the second year's professional immersion internship, I gained a deeper understanding of the international business environment. In the third year, I specialised in Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, earning both a Master in Management (MiM) degree and a Master of Science (MSc) degree.

This rigorous academic journey equipped me with essential methodologies in business management and data analysis. Practical experiences like case simulations, project practices, and tool applications further solidified my knowledge. The skills and insights I gained at EDHEC are crucial for my current role, significantly enhancing my professional competence and communication abilities.

What advice do you have for Chinese alumni seeking jobs or internships?

First and foremost, maintaining a positive mindset is crucial. In this VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity) era, the job market is highly competitive. Newcomers must stay optimistic and face failures and uncertainties bravely. Common scenarios like repeated job hunting setbacks, mismatched job content, or overwhelming tedious tasks should not deter you from your goals.

Secondly, after stabilising your mindset, it's essential to develop a reasonable and flexible career plan. The dynamic job market requires adaptability. If an offer doesn't perfectly align with your career plan, consider adjusting your plan to match the opportunity. This is not just about a timetable but a strategy to become a better version of yourself. Reflect on where you want to be in the next five to ten years, in terms of industry and level, and choose companies that support this growth.

Understanding each position's competency model is also vital—skills, communication abilities, stress tolerance, etc. Assess whether you possess these abilities and, if not, determine a feasible development path to bridge these gaps. Adjusting your job search strategy promptly when you find deficiencies is necessary. Adopting a Test and Learn approach can help you gradually find the right path. I highly recommend this job search strategy and encourage continuous mutual encouragement and exchange. Feel free to reach out anytime.
